what to wear to job interview

A job interview is one of those occasions where first impressions really do count.   Making sure that you dress to impress and project your most professional image is critical – it can have as much impact on your prospective employers as what you say in your interview.   Because of this, it can sometimes feel that getting your interview outfit right is added pressure and stress …the last thing you need …

To make sure you’re prepared, we’ve have put together a simple guide for how to dress your best for a job interview:

Dress with Confidence

One of the most important things to remember when dressing for an interview is that you feel confident in what you’re wearing.   A tailored, smart suit will work wonders for your confidence as well as looking stylish and in control.  You should look for an  interview dress or interview outfit which really makes a great first impression ‘ what we wear can make a big difference to our confidence levels –  you should feel you, but at your very best.

Be Smart with Colour Choices

Darker tones are normally perceived to be the most appropriate for job interviews, but that doesn’t have to mean black.   Try a smart business dress in blue, purple or red to exude confidence whilst adding a feminine touch to your look and beware of plunging necklines, they are not appropriate for a job interview.

Subtle Accessories

Be clever with your accessories ‘ overdoing it will cause a distraction to your interviewers and can also look tacky.   A simple pearl necklace or earrings is all you need to complete your outfit.   In terms of bags for work, avoid anything oversized or cluttered, a medium sized shoulder bag in black shows minimal fuss and looks more professional.

Always Wear a Jacket

A smart jacket is a job interview essential, especially in a more formal environment.   A quality suit jacket that fits you well will transform your look and show that you mean business, and you’ll be able to wear it time and time again after your interview. Interview suits are a great choice, add a sense on formality to the occasion, and reiterate your serious intentions for the role. Remember you will always look so much more professional if you add a jacket.

In summary, interview wear for women should focus on enhancing, rather than distracting your prospective employer from you and your business credentials. You want the interviewer to be focused on your outstanding professional experience and what a great addition you will be to the team, not questioning your “fit† with the company because of your chosen style of interview clothes.
